Using Facebook To Help Grow Your Business: Signing Up
We’ve recently discussed how much of a boon to your business both LinkedIn and Google+ can be. Now it’s time to move on to the behemoth of social networking, Facebook. How powerful is Facebook? Well, it’s reach is ubiquitous, so much so that we don’t have to spend any time explaining what Facebook is here. Here in the South, when somebody says they want a soda pop to drink, a lot of people simply say, “I’m going to get a coke.” The brand is absolute, and it’s no different with Facebook. When people say “social networking” they’re usually talking about Facebook, and it looks to get even stronger as the company has announced that it’s going public. As it stands at this moment, there are an estimated 845 million users worldwide. Combine that with the fact that creating your page is free. Now, imagine the messaging potential therein. So what are you waiting for?
It used to be that you needed a personal Facebook profile before you can set up a business page, however that is no longer the case. You can now start a business page without having a personal profile, but let's face it, who doesn't already have a Facebook account?
There are two ways to create a business page on Facebook
- Log in: While you are on your main profile, (your personal profile page) scroll all the way to the bottom of the screen and click on the "Advertising" link in the footer. You will be taken to a new page where you can then either click on the "Facebook Page" link in the text in the center column, or the footer link "Create a Page."
- Go to the Facebook Page creation home page
- Select the type of page you want to create (i.e., local business, company, cause, etc.)
- After you choose an option, you will be given a drop-down list of more options to choose to help Facebook know more about your business or other type of page.
Facebook will now create the page for you.
What Do I Do Now?
The next few steps are little more involved, but really aren’t that complex. Here’s what to do to develop your page:
- Add an image. This is your avatar. Choose a logo, or friendly face if you do not have a logo that will work well on the site. Never leave this blank -- it is better to use a temporary image than to not have one at all.
- Invite your friends. This option allows you to invite friends on Facebook to view your page. Do this after you customize -- you want them to see it at its best.
- Tell your fans. If you already have Facebook fans or subscribers, you can invite them to also become fans on your new page. Although you can invite fans anytime, it is recommended that you only invite fans once your page has been completely developed.
- Post status updates – Pretty self-explanatory, but vital. Again, wait until you’re finished with your business page.
- Promote and link from your business website – Do just this.
