If you're looking for your dream digital marketing job the playing field is more competitive than ever before. As the digital landscape continues to evolve, employers are gaining more of an understanding of what can be considered as basic digital marketing skills and the skill set a candidate should exhibit in order to stand out from the crowd.

In order to really stand out you need to get your professional ducks in a row! Employers are seeking candidates who know what they want, and have the skill set to help them achieve their goals both individually and as a member of the team.

Here are some skills to develop to really crush your next digital marketing interview and land your dream job!

Set Attainable Personal and Professional Goals

Employers are seeking individuals who have a strong sense of self. They want to know where you see yourself in one year, five years, and ten years. You need to have a solid career path in mind, especially in a competitive field like digital marketing.

Know your strengths, where you need improvement and be honest. If you're an excellent content creator let your potential employer know, and back it up with stellar examples of your work. If you see yourself in more of a management role in five years, tell them that that's where you want to be.

They may have training programs or offer educational support to help get you there. If you don't have goals you can wander aimlessly and that's not what employers are looking for. They are taking a chance on you and want to make sure that you're going to be around. Have goals and let them know what you want.

Have A Passion For The Work

Passion is contagious! Before you enter any interview make sure that you have the passion for the work. Any employer is looking for a team player that is willing to learn and is excited when they come through the door every day.

Passion will drive you to express your creativity as part of a team. You need to have the drive to provide value to your boss, your company and your clients. This is one of the most attractive attributes for any potential employer.

Have The Basic Digital Marketing Skill Set

Any employer is going to want to know that you have at least a basic understanding and grasp of all of the skills necessary to do the work. While process may vary from company to company, the basic skills necessary don't change.

Have an understanding of different writing styles, social media campaigns, email DRIP campaigns, and advertising. Understand how to allocate and pursue different channels in the marketing chain, and the important data you'll need to provide to justify actions you take.

Unless it's an entry level position straight out of college, you'll want to have developed the marketing skills necessary over the course of your career to provide value to any potential employer. Build a resume and portfolio that showcases your “brand” to any potential employer. Don't over emphasize any one skill or content, for example don't include 10 different press releases in your portfolio. Show a variety of work and make sure they're the best examples of your talent.

Throughout your professional career you should strive to constantly improve your skill set. Marketing is a fluid profession that is constantly changing. Having a passion for learning and working towards developing new skills is a necessary element of long-term success.

Be An Excellent Communicator

Effective communication is a skill that will not only improve your professional life, it will also enhance your personal life. Employers are looking for candidates who are confident not cocky, use the proper tone and can express that they are team players open to suggestion.

Be prepared to offer direct answers to difficult questions your employer will likely ask during your interview. For example:

  • How do you choose the best channels for our digital marketing budget?
  • What data would you include on an “executive dashboard?”
  • How would you control our brand on social media?

By having concise answers to questions like these you'll show any potential employer that you can understand, formulate and communicate answers to complex questions. After all, marketing is all about effectively communicating your message. Start by developing your personal communication skills.

The key to acing any interview is preparation. Develop an excellent personal skill set and a deep understanding of the skills necessary to be an effective marketer. Show and communicate how you can add value to the company, clients, and team. Put together a resume and portfolio of your greatest examples of your personal brand, and be prepared to eloquently answer some key questions and you'll have your perfect dream job in no time!
